Super promising premise but the reveal is really… tone deaf. But what else to expect from another movie with a hypersexualized brown best friend telling the white girl protagonist to “go get her melanated man”.
I really wanted to like it but the fight scenes and premise weren’t enough to even attempt to be leverage against its flaws. The script read like it was written by someone who’s never had a normal conversation in their life, especially not one with a person of color. The genre mashing was ambitious which could have been so good but fell clunky and flat, again because of poor writing.
It feels like a bunch of middle aged white men sat in a circle jerk, happened upon a good base premise and then ruined it by asking themselves repeatedly how to forcibly make the movie seem younger and more relevant while having absolutely no idea what they were talking about.
